Cancer diagnosis is on the rise but patients are living longer. It is imperative that we as clinicians can treat these patients. However, with this group come many challenges. This course will look at the geriatric patient with cancer, but also the more difficult side of cancer treatment for the healthcare professional. In this course the participant will learn how to recognize practitioner burnout, be more empathetic, and help patients as they approach end of life – topics that are often avoided in the acute care therapy setting.
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss the challenges faced when treating a geriatric patient.
- Discuss differences between empathy and sympathy.
- List stages of grief.
- Describe burnout.
- Discuss role of therapy with the hospice patient.
- Explain discharge barriers in the acute care setting.
